FYI - Trees

FYI Trees

Let me explain why...

1.  Carbon Dioxide CO2.
Terrestrial Carbon Cycle
Trees store carbon and make nice fresh air
Trees convert CO2 into Oxygen through their leaves.A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year.

2.  Trees Clean the Soil.
Trees filter sewage and farm chemicals, reduce the effects of animal wastes, clean roadside spills and clean water runoff into streams.

3. Trees Control Noise Pollution
Trees muffle road noise almost as effectively as stone walls. Tress, planted at strategic points in a neighbourhood or around your house, can stop major noises.

4. Trees Are Carbon Sinks
Firewood from trees.
To produce its food, a tree absorbs and locks away carbon dioxide in the wood, roots and leaves. Carbon dioxide is a global warming suspect. A forest is a carbon storage area or a "sink" that can lock up as much carbon as it produces. This locking-up process "stores" carbon as wood and not as an available "greenhouse" gas
.
5. Trees Shade, Cool and warm.
Shade resulting in cooling is what a tree is best known for. Shade from trees reduces the need for air conditioning in summer.  Studies have shown that parts of cities without cooling shade from trees can literally be "heat islands" with temperatures as much as 7 degrees higher than surrounding areas.
Trees and sheep escaping the hot sun.
In winter, trees break the force of winter winds, lowering heating costs. They also help keep us warm at home by providing firewood.  Every winter we get firewood from trees to keep us warm.  The firewood we get has been planted for building timber.  We chainsaw up the end logs that do not make the grade and split them into firewood.

6. Trees Act as Windbreaks
During windy and cold seasons, trees located on the windward side act as windbreaks. A windbreak can lower home heating bills up to 30%. A reduction in wind can also reduce the drying effect on soil and vegetation behind the windbreak and help keep precious topsoil in place.

7. Trees Fight Soil Erosion
Erosion control has always started with tree and grass planting projects. Tree roots bind the soil and their leaves break the force of wind and rain on soil. Trees fight soil erosion, conserve rainwater and reduce water runoff and sediment deposit after storms.

Trees keep us breathing, cool, warm, quiet and calm.  They keep our soil clean. They store carbon.

And its only on Arbor day we think about trees?

Beautiful Butterflies BY RICHARD

The magnificent  monarch . the monacrh  is a very beautiful endangered butterfly. In summer it lays it's eggs on the underneath of the leaf of swan plant.
A yellow and black Caterpillar hatches. It eats and eats and eats it turns into a chrysalis. After two weeks the chrysalis turns black and then a new butterfly hatches from it. lays it's eggs and the life cycle statrs again.

Sad swan plant

The solky slob sits sadly with poor green leaf.
The stork is as skiny as a snake.
the last caterpillar has mad it through battle.
The brown sad tree is as old as this school.
It used to be as happy as can be.
It used to look amazing
but now it looks like a solky slob.

The Sound Stranger

A stranger came this morning
dressed all in black and grey
Put every sound in a bag
and carried them away
The ticking of the clock
The swishing from the tap
The clicking of the tramp
The sizzling of the pan

The snoring of my dad
The door closing loudly
The clicking of the pens
And the sliding of the cartons
A stranger came this morning
He didn't leave his name
He left us only in silence
Life will never be noisy again.

Falling Trees By Sam

Falling Trees ,chainsaws trying to eat them up.
Chainsaws keep chomping ,chomping, and chomping until the tree falls down.
The trees are not very happy to die.
Chainsaws are very mean to kill the trees.
So people plant the seeds to make new trees.
But the chainsaw still want to kill the trees
little trees are good for bugs when is raining
the bugs can use the little trees like an umbrella.

How popcorn pops

Did you know that when popcorn pops it turns inside out and grows 40-50 times bigger than its original size!
The oldest popcorn ever found was in the Bat cave in New Mexico. It is about 5,600 years old.
Popcorn has also been found in tombs in Peru-archaeologists have found ancient kernels that look dry but contains very little amount of moisture. So when you heat it up it expands, and then POP! It immediately turns fluffy and white.
It pops so fast that it’s only a blur to the humans face.
So now you know that popcorn was around for a long time and how it pops. It’s still wonderful delicious treat for everyone

Piwakawaka

The Piwakawaka is found in the bush and in gardens. It eats insects, nectar and fruit.
Its not afraid of people. It darts around people in the bush because
it eats the insects that people disturb. Its nest is shaped like a cup.
The Piwakawaka is brown and white. The eggs are pink and have
brown spots.

Popcorn By Will

Did you know that popcorn uses heat to pop?

IT uses the heat so steam can build up inside it then, POP! It bursts inside out. It pops when the inside reaches 250 degrees centigrade.

The oldest popcorn ever found was in a bat cave in New Mexico. It was 5,600 years old and it could still pop.

Popcorn has been around for thousands of years and it is still a well loved treat.

Popcorn

`                                                             By Brodie
Did you know? Popcorn has been around thousands years and it can still pop how amazing!

To make popcorn pop you need lots of heat. Popcorn has got a bit of moisture inside it and the moisture starts to steam. When it gets to 250°C e popcorn explodes. The popcorn has turned inside out and looks like a fluffy ball.

A treat for afternoon tea yummy yummy!

Automaton

Did you know that room three has been making toys out of cardboard boxes?

We started off by making boxes out of card.
We then put a skewer and a cam in the box.
Then we made a toy out paper then traced it on to a piece of card and cut it out.
And coloured it in with crayons and paint.
We put an ice-cream stick and hot glued it together and put it in the box and see if it’ll work if not we make more adjustments.

So now you know what room3 have been up to.

Easter Holidays

YUM!!! I could smell the chocolate from miles away!
I went to wake up Jamie, "GET UP ITS EASTER AND YOUR BIRTHDAY!!!" I yelled at her,
She woke up and sleepily yawned, she came to the side of the crib and glared at me but when she saw the chocolate her face brightened up a bit.
I lifted her out of the crib and placed her on the floor, she struggled to open the tightly rapped egg but eventually ripped it open.
I ran into my room and opened my chocolates.
"THIS IS THE BEST EASTER EVER!" I shouted.

The New Car

Vroooooooom!!!!!!!!!
Our cloud white car speeds across the highway.
MMMMMMmmmmmmm ,,, overtaking two cars coming back from Palmerston,
Our car fits eight people!! Two in the front, three in the back and three in the middle.
I sit there admiring the view, with all the greenery and hills,
Grass juts out like a Spanish flamenco dancers dress.
I press the open button and like observatory the roof opens.
I sit back and relax.

The taste of things

I love the taste of radiant, juicy fruit,
And the crunchy skin on a roast goose,
I desire the crumbly apple pie,
And the intense flavoured cake reaching way up high,
I love the crunchy bacon rind,
And glossy, minty sauce that we smother on top,
I love the taste of cheerful, crunchy, golden roast potatoes,
And crisp, fresh coleslaw or salad,
I love the taste of lots of things,
(Including the taste of gummy rings!)

Archimedes (pulleys)

We use pulleys almost everyday!

Archimedes was a great mathematician and engineer who was born 287 years BC in Syracuse, Sicily. He is credited with coming up with the idea and the use of modern day maths equations and the way things like levers, pumps and pulleys work. Archimedes had wrote in a letter to King Hieron that he could move any weight with pulleys, he boasted that given enough pulleys he could move the whole world! The king challenged him to move a big ship that would take lots of men and a great amount of work to move the sea. On the planned day, the ship was loaded with lots of passengers and a full cargo, and the king watched to see if Archimedes could do what he said he could. Archimedes knew he could improve his mechanical advantage for lifting or moving an object using pulleys.
A pulley moves a force along a rope without changing how big it is. When engineers work with pulleys they often make sure that the rope of the pulley moves smooth and evenly, without catching. These systems are known as simply "pulley systems" because they use the same rope through the whole system, if the pulleys were attached with more than one rope the system would be a "complex pulley system".

Automaton by Blake and Andrew

Have you ever had a cooler toy than this?
It’s called a automaton and it is the coolest toy ever
It can move up and down and has got the most
beautiful  colours on it. It has a  robot face, a spiral
nose and a big hat . So how’s that that for a toy.

My automaton is almost finished. Mine has lots of colours
and lots of features.
When I finish my toy I’m going to
give it to my little brother Mathew

Early Toys by Jeffrey

Did you know that people played with toys 2000 years ago for example, the Egyptians played with dolls, toy soldiers, wooden animals, balls, marbles, spinning tops and knuckle bones.
The Ancient Greeks children liked playing ball games; they also liked playing knuckle bones, spinning tops, dolls, model horses with wheels were popular, hoops, rocking horses. Don’t you think it would be good to live at that place?
The Romans also had toys for the children to play with at that time. There were wooden or clay dolls (which were a delight to the girls back then), ball games and board games were a favourite to the boys at that time. They also fiddled with animal knuckle bones. The first doll house was invented in Germany!
So now you have seen what the Ancient Civilisations had fun with, would you like to have been a child in the Ancient times?

Ancient toys by Will

Toys have been played with for hundreds and thousands of years.
If you think toys were only invented in the 20th century think again! Toys have around since before the early Egyptians.

The toys then were like the toys now but they had no electronics. Back then, they played with board games, dolls, marbles, toy soldiers, knuckle bones, spinning tops, wooden animals, balls, inflated pigs bladders and many more.

So now you know what all the children in the ancient times played with.Would you like to be a child then, or do you prefer the technology today?
